Standing Voice promotes the rights and well-being of people with albinism in Africa

Standing Voice is a human rights charity based in Tanzania, Malawi and the UK

Across Africa, people with albinism face discrimination and witchcraft-related violence. Over 850 human rights violations have been reported across 30 African countries since 2006.

Albinism is a rare, non-contagious, recessive genetic condition that limits the body’s ability to process melanin, reducing or eliminating pigmentation in the skin, eyes and hair. Albinism occurs if both parents carry the recessive albinism gene, in which case the probability of having an affected baby is 1 in 4 (25%). This probability is the same in each pregnancy and bears no relation to other births. Globally 1 person in 18,000 has albinism.

Who we are

Standing Voice is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the rights, well-being and inclusion of people with albinism in Africa, through health, education, welfare, and livelihoods programmes.

We stand against violence, discrimination, and exclusion, believing every individual deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.

Based in Tanzania, Malawi, and the UK, we work alongside communities to deliver grassroots health, education, and advocacy initiatives that create lasting change.

What we do

Our initiatives address the complex challenges faced by people with albinism in Africa, supporting their full participation as valued members of society. From building clinical networks that prevent skin cancer and support low vision, to reintegrating children into inclusive schools and providing trauma-informed care for survivors of violence, our work promotes inclusion and directly confronts abuse. We design practical, scalable, and sustainable programs, amplifying the voices of people with albinism and ensuring lasting impact.
